(Reporter: “The head of Secret Service just resigned. Can you speak on the bipartisan efforts to, I guess, have Secret Service acknowledge what went wrong there?”)
“I think members on both sides of the aisle, were were shocked by the events and the assassination attempt, obviously. It’s important that the Secret Service accept some responsibility. I know that there is a number of, investigations that are continuing, internal and, and potentially, external, from the department itself. Members on both sides of the aisle called for her resignation. And I think that was the the right decision.”

(Reporter: “On the bipartisan task force announced today on the Secret Service, can you give a timeline at all about when members will be appointed and when the public should see those recommendations?”)
“I believe that, to answer the second part of the question, I believe the resolution or the document we vote on will talk about a date. But I refer you to that document in the speaker’s office and leaders office as to the timing of the appointments.”

STORYLINE:
House Democratic leaders said that the decision for the Secret Service director "was the right decision" as lawmakers from both parties had called for the director to step down.

The director of the Secret Service is stepping down from her job following the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump that unleashed intensifying outcry about how the agency tasked with protecting current and former presidents could fail in its core mission.

Kimberly Cheatle, who had served as Secret Service director since August 2022, had been facing growing calls to resign and several investigations into how the shooter was able to get so close to the Republican presidential nominee at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
