STORYLINE:
Smoke rose into the sky over the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis on Tuesday as Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza continued.
That happened after Israeli strikes on Monday killed at least 37 people, according to the morgue at Nasser Hospital and journalists who saw the bodies.
Those strikes took place as hundreds of people were evacuating following a new order from the Israeli military.
The ongoing war began with an assault by Hamas militants on southern Israel on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians.
The Health Ministry in Gaza says over 39,000 Palestinians have now been killed in the nine-month war.
It doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count.
