STORYLINE:
Travelers at Mexico City’s main airport were stuck for hours Friday after a global technology outage grounded flights worldwide.

The trouble was sparked by an update issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike and affected its customers running Microsoft Windows, the world’s most popular operating system for personal computers.

It was not the result of hacking or a cyberattack, according to CrowdStrike, which apologized and said a fix was on the way.

In Mexico, dozens of flights were canceled and hundreds of people were delayed at several airports.

Viva Aerobus, a major Mexican low-cost airline, announced the cancellation of all its international flights scheduled for Friday.

Volaris was another of the worst-affected airlines in the country.

At Mexico City’s Benito Juarez Airport, 22 flights were canceled and another 250 delayed.

Some 2,000 passengers were affected, particularly those traveling to or arriving from the United States, airport authorities said.

The outage also knocked down some financial companies and news outlets, disrupted hospitals, and affected small businesses and government offices worldwide.

The breadth of the outages highlighted the fragility of a digitized world dependent on just a few providers for key computing services.
