"What we’re looking at essentially is today, much of the world woke up to what we’re calling this massive technology outage. And that’s impacted companies across various industries. That looks like, the ranges of that can look like anything from, you know, folks having trouble with their online Starbucks order to, you know, these flight cancellations and delays and trouble with making bank payments, to some more serious impacts like system disruptions at hospitals and trouble making appointments that has led to delays and sometimes cancellations. At the center of this massive disruption is the cybersecurity company called CrowdStrike, which, you know, may not have been a household name 24 hours ago, but it’s a major provider of cloud based security technology worldwide. So what caused Friday’s outage was this faulty update that was sent out by CrowdStrike for one of its tools, Falcon. And this defect impacts Microsoft Windows hosts. So, in other words, the organizations that we’re seeing having disruptions today are both CrowdStrike clients who use Microsoft Windows as their operating systems. Experts really just say that this underlines the vulnerability of having an online infrastructure that’s reliant on just one of a handful of providers for this kind of tech. One expert put it as like putting all eggs in one basket, essentially. CrowdStrike has said that it has a fix that it’s deploying and so hopefully this will get fixed back on line. You know, when something goes wrong, like we see today, you know all those eggs kind of break."

STORYLINE:
The trouble with the update issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike affected customers running Microsoft Windows. It was not the result of hacking or a cyberattack, according to CrowdStrike, which apologized and said a fix was on the way.
