1. SOUNDBITE (English) James Bore, cyber expert:
"The problem with this is that, unlike normally when we have issues with software you can pull back the update or send out a new update, this means you can’t because they’re not working. So instead someone has to go to the computer or at least find a way to remotely access it, with some servers you can do that, restart into what’s called safe mode, go into it, find this file, delete the file, and then reboot it again to get it to start up. Now this doesn’t take too long, we’re talking 30 seconds to a minute, but that’s for every single computer and it has to be a person that does it. We can’t automate it. So we’ve got all of these critical systems, we’ve got obviously hospitals, airlines, banks, I’ve heard that there’s emergency services involved, and there’s going to be more and more, I know supermarkets have apparently been affected over here as well. All of these systems need manual interaction to fix them. We’re probably talking millions of computers looking at the scale of the outbreak. This is going to take some time to fix, and this is the type of thing that is absolutely inevitable with the way that technology now works. I’ve written about this for years, I’ve got a chapter in my book about it. So this is how we have built our entire technology ecosystem, (which) leads to this sort of problem happening."
2. SOUNDBITE (English) James Bore, cyber expert:
"We used to have a lot of small companies making different tools. Some were good, some were bad, all doing roughly the same thing, and people would use those. But they’ve been gradually picked up, acquired, and consolidated down. So now we’ve got a very small number of companies who are producing almost everything."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) James Bore, cyber expert:
"So in terms of cyber security and security, they (CrowdStrike) are probably one of the biggest players in the world. Now they might not be well known by people, but almost anytime you read an article about the latest sophisticated cyber security attack, CrowdStrike are involved somewhere, whether that’s remediation or just providing expert comment. They are very big, and while Microsoft provide the operating system, CrowdStrike provide a tool which helps to secure it just that bit more, which is what a lot of companies want."
STORYLINE:
Cyber expert James Bore said on Friday that the global technology outage "is going to take some time to fix" as flights, banks, media outlets and companies across the world continue to face disruption.

An internet outage affecting Microsoft is causing disruption across the world, with problems continuing hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.

Airlines in the United States, Europe, Australia and India were reporting problems, with some flights grounded. Retail outlets, banks, railway companies and hospitals in several parts of the world were also affected in what appeared to be an unprecedented internet disruption.

Speaking from London via videolink, Bore said that all affected systems "need manual interaction to fix them," adding that the scale of the outbreak is likely to be in the millions.

Bore also described this type of outbreak as "absolutely inevitable" with how we have built our entire technology ecosystem.
