STORYLINE:
Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday for a campaign for his ally Alexandre Ramagem, mayoral pre-candidate for the city.
The event took place days after an investigation by federal police has led to allegations that under the watch of Alexandre Ramagem, former intelligence chief, Brazil’s intelligence agency spied on members of the judiciary, lawmakers and journalists during the administration of Bolsonaro.
Alongside Ramagem and the current governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, Bolsonaro drew parallels between his stabbing attack in 2018 and the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
“Have you noticed that only conservatives and right-wingers are attacked? They tried to kill Donald Trump a few days ago in the United States. One miracle there, another here,” said Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen by Adélio Bispo de Oliveira while being carried by supporters during a campaign event in 2018.
Bispo de Oliveira was arrested at the scene of the attack, and an investigation by the police concluded that he acted alone, with no mastermind behind the action.
Bolsonaro suffered severe bleeding and had to undergo a series of surgeries.
