Joe Biden has pulled out of the US presidential race, bowing to weeks of pressure over his age and health. The 81-year-old said he was ending his re-election bid in the best interest of his party and the country. He announced his decision in a letter released on Sunday where said he plans to focus on his duties as president for the remainder of his term. Biden has now endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic party’s new nominee to run against Donald Trump in November’s election.
Biden’s exit comes less than a month before the Democratic convention in Chicago. Kamala Harris is moving to lock in delegates to confirm her nomination. But some in the party are calling for the process to be thrown open for other contenders.
