1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Cavalier Johnson, (D) Milwaukee:
"I know that people have those questions in light of what happened Saturday in Pennsylvania, again, the horrific attack at Mr. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. What I can tell you is the designation we have here in the city of Milwaukee for this convention is a ‘national special security event.’ It is the highest designation that our federal government provides for an event of this caliber, of this magnitude. So I feel pretty confident, in what we’ve worked to establish in terms of public safety for this event over the course of the last over the course of the last 18 months, working with the Secret Service, working with the FBI, working with the Milwaukee Police Department, Milwaukee Fire Department, other law enforcement agencies, not just here in southeastern Wisconsin, all across our state, and really all across the country that are coming here to make sure that this is a safe event for everybody."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Cavalier Johnson, (D) Milwaukee:
"I know that, the Secret Service has been monitoring this, and, President Joe Biden, of course, has asked the Secret Service to take a further look at what’s happening with the security around the Republican National Convention here in light of what happened, again in Butler, Pennsylvania, this past Saturday at Mr. Trump’s, at Mr. Trump’s political rally. What I can say is this, is that the folks on the ground here have confidence in the work that they’ve put in over the course of the last 18 months. The director of the United States Secret Service continues to have faith in the work that happened over the last 18 months for security. And I have faith in the Secret Service, in the Milwaukee Police Department and other law enforcement agencies that are providing public safety here today."

STORYLINE:
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, on Monday morning, expressed confidence in the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies providing security for the Republican National Convention, which begins Monday in Milwaukee.
"I have faith in the Secret Service, in the Milwaukee Police Department and other law enforcement agencies that are providing public safety here today," Johnson said.
Former President Donald Trump and his allies will face the nation during their four-day convention in Milwaukee unquestionably united and ready to “fight,” as the bloodied Trump cried out Saturday while Secret Service agents at his Pennsylvania rally rushed him to safety.
Still, anger and anxiety are coursing through the party, even as many top Republicans call for calm and a lowering of tensions.
The convention, coming less than four months before Election Day, will take place in heavily Democratic Milwaukee, the largest city in a pivotal swing state Trump lost by less than 1 percentage point four years ago.
Even before the assassination attempt, major protests were expected, although movement will be severely restricted as part of enhanced security precautions established by the Secret Service.
Security officials previously announced that people just outside the Secret Service perimeter would be allowed to carry guns openly or concealed as permitted by state law. Wisconsin statutes outlaw only machine guns, short-barreled shotguns and silencers.
