STORYLINE:
An Israeli strike Sunday hit the Abu Ariban School in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing over a dozen people and wounded at least 15 others. The school has been shelter for Palestinians displaced in the ongoing war.
According to counts by a journalist with The Associated Press at two central Gaza hospitals, the Al-Awdah Hospital received 12 bodies, while the Aqsa Martyrs Hospital received two bodies and over 15 wounded people, among them children.
"We do not want anything. We only want to be safe, but now neither the school nor the home nor any place is safe. They are targeting everything," said Um Fadi Al-Zeer, a displaced woman.
Israel’s military in a statement said it struck “terrorists” operating in the area of a school run by the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees.
It comes a day after at least 90 people were killed and at least 300 others were wounded in a massive Israeli airstrike strike in southern Gaza, according to local health officials.
The strike was one of the deadliest in the nine-month war sparked by Hamas’ Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took more than 200 hostage.
More than 38,400 people in Gaza have been killed in Israeli ground offensives and bombardments since then, according to the territory’s Health Ministry. The ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.
