15. SOUNDBITE (French) Volodymyr Kogutyak, Vice-President of the French Ukrainian Association:
"The first is that the Russian and Belarusian athletes who are coming to Paris under a neutral, white flag should not be allowed to come to Paris for the Games. The second thing that is very important for us, is that we know today that there is a request from the international community to create an Olympic truce, so that the war in Ukraine can stop for a while. Unfortunately, Russia has refused this. What we are asking for today is for the Ukraine not to be bombed during the Olympic Games. For us, this is very important because the Olympic Games is a festive and sporting occasion, and it’s important for us that this moment should not become a sad moment during which Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian civilians.”
16. Close of banner reading (English) “#Boycott Russian sport"

STORYLINE:
In a powerful tribute to the hundreds of Ukrainian athletes who have perished since the Russian invasion of their homeland, the Union of Ukrainians of France led a peaceful march in Paris on Saturday.

The demonstration, held in the run-up to this month’s Olympic Games, aimed to honor these fallen sports heroes and highlight the ongoing impact of the conflict on Ukraine’s athletic community.

Several hundred athletes – some of them who competed at elite levels – plus coaches and other people closely involved in professional and amateur sports in Ukraine have been killed in the invasion since 2022, including fighting as soldiers on the front lines.

“It’s important to show that the problem facing Ukraine today is not just a Ukrainian problem, it’s an international problem.,” said Volodymyr Kogutyak, Vice-President of the French Ukrainian association.
