"Well, that’s something I think, you know, going to have to be seen because he’s a good president. You know, he’s been in politics for many, many years. And I just I would rather see him other than Trump and or if they can get somebody younger that’ll do a good job."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) James Jarowitz, voter:
Well, right now it would probably be the vice president." (as a candidate)
4. Cutaway of Kansas State Representative Alexis Simmons canvassing in a neigborhood
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexis Simmons, State Representative, (D), Kansas:
"So voters are fearful. I hear a lot of anxiety. Depending on the household, it’s not so much about Joe Biden, and it’s more about a possibility of no Joe Biden and the possibility of Donald Trump winning. Another four years of Trump. People are very nervous about that. And that seems to be the dominant emotion that comes out at the doors about the presidential race. Of course, commentary about his debate performance has come up, but many people excuse it with an explanation that, he’s been sick. He had been running across the planet right beforehand. So I think people are generally pretty forgiving about his debate performance, but it does not negate the anxiety that they’re feeling about November."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Alexis Simmons, State Representative, (D), Kansas:
"I have mixed feelings about it. I have mixed feelings. I absolutely understand the concerns that people feel. I also think, pragmatically speaking, it does not benefit Democrats to dwell on that and I think it only helps us to keep our eye on the ball. Remember, this election is not about Donald Trump. It’s not about Joe Biden. This election is about abortion access, inflation, lowering taxes, fully funding education. People should not be afraid they’re going to be taxed out of their homes. And so we need to keep those issues centered and think which party, which candidate is going to, support us in those areas. And Donald Trump is not it. It’s Joe Biden. And we need to stay focused on the policies."

STORYLINE:
The debate over whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the U.S. presidential election was on Democratic voters’ minds Thursday evening when Alexis Simmons, a 28-year-old state House of Representatives candidate, went door-to-door to talk to voters deemed most likely to vote in the state’s Aug. 6 primary.
Some acknowledged concern about his age but several said they have confidence that Vice President Kamala Harris could lead the ticket, while some simply were frustrated, believing the focus on Biden was misplaced, seeing Trump as a threat to democracy.
James Jarowitz, a 76-year-old retired city bus driver, said Biden he is open to having someone younger as the nominee — mentioning Vice President Kamala Harris specifically.
"He’s a good president," Jarowitz said of Biden. "I would rather see him other than Trump."
Alexis Simmons is a Democrat, running for a seat in the Kansas state House. She says Democratic voters are voicing their concerns to her.
"Voters are fearful. I hear a lot of anxiety. Depending on the household, it’s not so much about Joe Biden, and it’s more about a possibility of no Joe Biden and the possibility of Donald Trump winning. Another four years of Trump," she said.
