STORYLINE:
On Day 1 of Alec Baldwin’s trial for involuntary manslaughter, prosecutor Erlinda Ocampo Johnson told jurors the actor “violated the cardinal rules of firearm safety” in her opening.
Jurors will decide if Baldwin committed a felony when cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed on the set of the film “Rust” in 2021. The 66-year-old Baldwin could get 18 months in prison if he’s found guilty. The jurors will hear testimony from crew members who were eyewitnesses to the shooting, including director Joel Souza, who was injured. The defense has not yet said whether jurors will hear testimony from Baldwin himself.
The trial will delve into the confluence of gun safety, high-wattage celebrity and a low-budget Western movie on a remote movie ranch. Baldwin was the lead actor and co-producer on “Rust.” He has pleaded not guilty and says he followed instructions in pointing the gun and didn’t pull the trigger.
Defense attorney Alex Spiro told jurors Wednesday that the shooting death of cinematographer Hutchins was an “unspeakable tragedy.” But he emphasized in his opening statement that Baldwin "was an actor, acting.”
