STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Washington on Wednesday for a NATO summit commemorating the 75th anniversary of the military alliance, which has never been larger and more focused but is also facing potentially existential threats from outside and within.
Macron called a surprise snap election after the anti-immigration National Rally made huge gains in the June 9 European elections.
After no party won a majority last Sunday, the President said he will wait for the country’s political parties to build a "Republican" majority at the National Assembly before he can decide on a new prime minister.
Macron’s comment came in a letter published by several French media outlets as political leaders of various parties have been trying to project themselves as the only solution to the current political turmoil after the inconclusive results.
The French President did not speak to journalists upon his arrival at the summit.
