1. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain:
“I believe the first message needs to be one of validity and celebration for an Atlantic alliance that is turning 75 years. And one which, of course, all allies – and I am convinced this is the case of all people we represent, as well – we all wish a long, continued life for this alliance.”

2. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain:
“There’s also a message of solidarity, in this case with Ukraine, a people who are suffering as a result of an illegal, unfair and completely unjustifiable war. Ukraine was not a threat to Putin’s regime in Russia. And as President Biden said yesterday, ‘Ukraine before the war was a free and independent country. And after the war, thanks to the solidarity of the ally countries, Ukraine will continue a free and independent country.’ And I think this is so important to always remember. I have particularly said this to the Spanish people from the start of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine: that Ukraine isn’t just defending its territorial integrity, it’s not just defending it’s right to exist – which is being questioned by Putin – it’s not just defending its right to decide freely who they want to be in the future; this is something much more profound. It’s about the defending an international order based on rules. This is about defending international rights, which are being undermined as a result of this illegal, unfair and unjustifiable war. And finally, about defending democratic values of a people which are being put into question as a result of Putin’s war in Ukraine.”

3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain:
“Therefore, I think that what will happen later today is really important. Also, the words from (NATO) Secretary General Stoltenberg and President Biden of commitment and solidary for a people and a country that is seeing its own existence put at risk as a consequence of Putin’s imperialism.”

4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain:
“Lastly, and this is important for Spain as we began working on this at the NATO summit in Madrid (in 2022), and that is the need for greater commitment from NATO to the countries on its southern flank. You all know that there is the 360-degree approach; it’s true that, sadly, instability, the effects of climate change, booming dictatorships in a region as important as is the Sahel for Spain, is leading to a greater Russian presence there. There is also a greater presence of terrorist and criminal organizations that are trafficking humans and that are largely behind the migration crisis that has been plaguing the Mediterranean region these last few years.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Spain:
“It’s obvious that the Spanish national (soccer) team has earned its place as a crowd favorite. And I think it’s important to celebrate and congratulate a team of players who have shown true teamsmanship. This means solidarity, exhibiting a team’s mentality, not just for the individual player – although it’s clear that the quality of many of the players is extraordinary. And we are wishing them the best. As I said yesterday on social media, the entire country is behind you. All of Spain is incredibly proud of our national team. And, of course, we are hopeful that next Sunday we will become European champions.”
