STORYLINE:
El nuevo primer ministro de Haití, Garry Conille, y el jefe de la policía haitiana, visitaron el martes el hospital más grande del país, después de que las autoridades dijeran que habían recuperado el control de la institución médica el domingo.
La policía tomó el control del Hospital de la Universidad Estatal de Haití, conocido como el Hospital General de Puerto Príncipe, tras meses de ataques por parte de grupos armados.
Los ataques de los grupos criminales han llevado al sistema de salud haitiano al borde del colapso, y la escalada de violencia ha provocado un aumento de pacientes con enfermedades graves y una escasez de recursos para tratarlos.
Las pandillas han estado saqueando, incendiando y destruyendo instituciones médicas y farmacias en la capital, donde controlan hasta el 80% de la zona.
Además del hospital, las pandillas se han apoderado de comisarías, han atacado el principal aeropuerto internacional, el cual permanece cerrado desde hace casi tres meses, y han tomado por asalto las dos mayores prisiones de Haití.
Según un informe de la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones, la violencia en Haití ha desplazado a casi 580.000 personas desde marzo.
