German taxpayers have spent hundreds of millions to host the Euro Cup. Federal funds went to renovating stadiums and protecting teams and fans, and municipalities shelled out big bucks for fan zones. The result was job creation and a tourism boom. Germany’s bet paid off, says sports economist Thomas Bezold in an interview with DW’s Kassandra Sundt.
