STORYLINE:
An Israeli airstrike overnight in central Gaza killed at least six people including two children and two women, hospital authorities said on Sunday.
The strike hit a house in the central town of Zawaida, according to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the city of Deir al-Balah where the dead bodies were taken.
Mourners, meanwhile, held Muslim funeral services on Sunday morning for four people who were among the fatalities of a Friday Israeli airstrike on a school-turned-shelter in the built-up Nuseirat refugee camp.
The strike killed 16 people and wounded 50 others, according to the health ministry.
The funerals took place in the courtyard of al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, and the four dead included a 13-year-old girl, according to an Associated Press journalist at the medical facility.
Israel launched the war in Gaza after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killed some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducted about 250.
Since then, Israeli ground offensives and bombardments have killed more than 37,900 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.
The war has largely cut off the flow of food, medicine and basic goods to Gaza, and people there are now totally dependent on aid.
The top U.N. court has concluded there is a “plausible risk of genocide” in Gaza — a charge Israel strongly denies.
