STORYLINE:
With 24 days left until Venezuela’s presidential election, the electoral process entered its last stretch on Thursday with the official start of the campaign.
The choice will be between the continuity of the political project devised by the late Hugo Chávez or a change of course after 25 years of socialist governments.
Although the 10 candidates, including Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro who aspires to be re-elected for a third six-year term, have been touring the country for months, authorities set the official campaign from July 4 to July 25.
At the start of the campaign events on Thursday in Caracas, both the official campaigns of Maduro and the opposition candidacy of Edmundo Gonzalez, with the support of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, gathered their followers in the streets of the capital.
"They tried to wipe us off the map, they wanted to kill me again and again, and they could not. Nor will they ever be able to. And now, on July 28, we are going to collect all the bills from the facist right wing," Maduro told supporters in Caracas.
Venezuela’s self-described socialist government is facing a serious electoral challenge in a presidential election for the first time in decades.
More than 21 million Venezuelans are registered to vote, but the exodus of over 7.7 million people due to the prolonged crisis — including about 4 million voters — is expected to reduce the number of potential voters to about 17 million.
Voting is not mandatory and is done on electronic machines.
