STORYLINE:
Hard-line Iranian presidential candidate Saeed Jalili held a campaign rally on Wednesday in Tehran ahead of Friday’s runoff vote.
"We will not allow anybody to restrict the power of our nation," he said at the rally on Wednesday in the nation’s capital.
Jalili, known for his tough stance against the U.S. and the 2015 nuclear deal, vowed to stand against "foreign pressure," a reference to the U.S. sanctions.
Supporters waving the national flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran and chanting were met with the sight of Jalili on stage, holding red flowers and waving.
Jalili, 58, faces the runoff election Friday against the little-known reformist Masoud Pezeshkian, a heart surgeon.
The former hard-line nuclear negotiator is competing in a close race with Pezeshkian who led with a small margin in the first round.
With Iran’s nuclear program enriching uranium at levels near-weapons grade, a win by Jalili may again see already-stalled negotiations freeze.
The election has been largely overshadowed by record-low turnout of around 40% last Friday.
