STORYLINE:
As stars gathered for the 35th Golden Melody Awards in Taipei City, Saturday, four Chinese artists nominated for several awards between them were notable by their absence.
Jude Chiu and Xu Jun, who had arrived in Taipei City to prepare for the ceremony, made a last minute announcement that they declined to attend.
Earlier, Tia Ray and Su Yunying, both nominated for the Best Mandarin Female Vocalist, also announced they would not attend the annual Mando pop event.
Among the stars who did walk the red carpet in the humid summer heat were artists from Taiwan’s indigenous tribes, its Hakka community and the U.S.
Taiwanese aboriginal singer Usay Kawlu brought members of her family and a children’s choir, in traditional dress, to help celebrate the Amis culture.
“The style of the design reflects the tribe itself, closer to people and everyone’s life. This is why she also sang a song in the album,” said the singer, indicating a child standing with her.
Utjung Tjakivalid, a Taiwanese aboriginal singer, dressed in shimmering silver to highlight gender diversity.
“Today, I represent an asexual and non-binary person. The unisex feeling," explained Tjakivalid. "My attire is beautiful, no? Although this looks like a dress, but I still keep my male appearance. I think this is Taiwan’s diversity. Yes. Thank you.”
American recording artists James Fauntleroy and Ant Clemons crossed the Pacific to attend the ceremony as moderators.
Fauntleroy laughed as he described the feast of meat he and Clemons had enjoyed, joking, "We surprised people because we ate American amount of food.”
