STORYLINE:
Japan’s Emperor Naruhito planted a cherry tree at Oxford University on Friday in the gardens of the college where he was once a student.
Naruhito was joined by Empress Masako for his return to Merton College, where he studied for a postgraduate history degree between 1983 and 1985.
Those two years were chronicled in his memoir “The Thames and I".
Masako also studied at Oxford’s Balliol College a few years after her husband.
Their visit to the university was due to be the Japanese royals’ final stop of a weeklong stay in the UK aimed at bolstering ties as well as offering them a chance to revisit their personal connections.
