STORYLINE:
Romania is expecting higher-than-usual temperatures this weekend with meteorologists saying they could soar to 40 degrees Celsius ((104 degrees Fahrenheit) across the country.
A ‘’red alert’’ indicating extreme heat was issued for the southern part of the country, including the capital, Bucharest, where people sunbathed in parks and cooled off near lakes on Friday.
Much of the Balkan region is sweltering in an early summer heatwave and people are expected to flock to the Black Sea beaches this Bank Holiday weekend.
Meteorologists say the heat in the region this week came from Africa, carrying sand particles that created a cloud-like layer, dimming the skyline.
While hot summers are normal in the Balkans, temperatures don’t reach such heights in mid-June, prompting weather alerts and warnings across the region.
