stars like Milton Berle and Jackie Gleason and Dean Martin, and that she should do a traditional sitcom instead. And she, she pulled on her ear a lot, but she did not listen."

"Oh, this is. Thank you. Well, this is quite a trip. I grew up just a few blocks from here. Yucca and Wilcox. I was a block north of Hollywood Boulevard, and when I was a little girl, I can’t begin to count the times that my grandmother and I would walk up here to the Grauman’s Chinese (Theatre). That’s what it was called then and look at all the footprints and handprints of all these great movie stars. And Betty Grable was one of my favorites, and I remember bending down and putting my hands on her handprints, never dreaming that someday I’d be putting my hands here, 80 years later. (Laughter and applause) Well, I want to thank all of you. Oh, my gosh, my family and both old friends and new friends for coming here this morning to help me celebrate."

"Just lucky, I guess. (Laughs) Well, the secret is not to get depressed or discouraged. I remember when I first started out, I auditioned for something and it was narrowed down to another girl and me. It wasn’t a big role or anything, but still, it was a job and I thought I had it, but I didn’t. She had it. She got it. But what saved me from being discouraged was, I don’t know. It came to me I thought, ‘You know what? It’s her turn. It’s not my turn.’ My turn will come. So I didn’t get discouraged. And so when kids ask me, ‘What do you do to not get discouraged?’ I say, ‘Well, OK, just remember, it’s not your turn yet. Your turn will come.’"
