China strongly condemns and firmly opposes this.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday warned the Philippines of “consequences” if the country did not stop what Beijing deemed “provocations” in the disputed South China Sea.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remark at a daily news briefing when asked about the criticisms launched by the Philippines against what they said was pirate-like behavior by Chinese coast guards against Filipino navy personnel during their supply mission to their territorial outpost in a disputed shoal.
Video and photographs issued by the Philippine military Wednesday night showed the chaotic faceoff on Monday at the Second Thomas Shoal, claimed by Beijing as Ren’ai Reef, with Chinese personnel onboard boats brandishing knives, axe and sticks while surrounding two Philippine navy supply boats.
In Beijing, Lin pushed back against the accusation, saying the Philippine ships “intentionally rammed” Chinese vessels and their people “poured water and threw objects” at Chinese personnel.
“The Chinese side has taken necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty in accordance with the law, which is legitimate, reasonable, professional and restrained. It is beyond reproach,” Lin insisted.
China claims the South China Sea virtually in its entirety.
