STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of Yemenis joined a recurring Friday demonstration in Sanaa in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Demonstrators were seen chanting slogans while holding Palestinian and Yemeni flags, machine guns and placards.

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels have organized protests nearly every Friday since the war between Israel and Hamas erupted on October 7.

The Houthis have attacked ships in the Red Sea since November, saying they want to force Israel to end its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The ships targeted by the Houthis, however, largely have had little or no connection to Israel, the U.S. or other nations involved in the war.

The Houthis have launched at least 53 attacks on shipping, seized one vessel and sank another since November, according to the U.S. Maritime Administration.

Houthi attacks have dropped in recent weeks as the rebels have been targeted by a U.S.-led airstrike campaign in Yemen and as shipping through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden has declined over the threat.

The rebels have also fired missiles towards Israel, though they have largely fallen short or been intercepted.

Israel’s ongoing air, sea and ground offensive in Gaza has killed more than 33,900 people, displaced hundreds of thousands and leveled large parts of the enclave.

It was launched in response to Hamas’ October 7 attack into Israel, in which militants killed around 1,200 people and abducted around 250 others.
