The verdict was read after three hours of deliberations, capping off a dramatic day in the Manhattan federal courthouse in which Trump stormed out of the courtroom during closing arguments read by Carroll’s attorneys."

"This is the second trial in nine months centered on Carroll’s allegations that Trump sullied her reputation, calling her a liar after she accused him of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan department store. This trial focused on comments Trump made while president and attorneys for Carroll said that the jury should consider the fact that Trump had continued to disparage Carroll on the campaign trail and social media and award substantial punitive damages. Trump was not present when the verdict was read. On social media he’s called the verdict absolutely ridiculous."

"Trump was in court for several days of the trial, and he made his displeasure known. He was shaking his head. He was rolling his eyes at the judge at points. Today, he stormed out of the courtroom unexpectedly, as closing arguments were being read by Carroll’s attorneys. Attorneys for Trump have said that he should have the chance to defend himself. He should be able to address the original allegations of sexual abuse, something that the judge told him he couldn’t talk about. The jury was ordered to accept the result of a previous trial, which found he was liable for the sexual abuse and a separate defamation."

"We will immediately appeal. We will set aside that ridiculous jury. And I just want to remind you all of one thing, I will continue with President Trump to fight for everybody’s First Amendment right to speak. STORYLINE:
A jury awarded $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll on Friday in a stinging and expensive rebuke to former President Donald Trump for his continued social media attacks against the longtime advice columnist over her claims that he sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store.
The award, when coupled with a $5 million sexual assault and defamation verdict last year from another jury in a case brought by Carroll, raised to $88.3 million what Trump must pay her. Protesting vigorously, he said he would appeal.
