Indigenous people in Bolivia celebrate Andean New Year marking winter solstice

The traditional Bolivian festival dates back to the ancient pre-Hispanic peoples, which celebrates the return of the sun at the time of the winter solstice.

At dawn on Friday, thousands gathered on the Andean hills and mountains to welcome the first rays of the sun with open palms, which according to Andean beliefs are charged with new energy.
