STORYLINE:
Muslims in New Delhi attended Eid al-Adha prayers at the iconic Jama Masjid mosque on Monday to mark one of the biggest holidays in the Islamic calendar.
Eid al-Adha, known as the “Feast of Sacrifice” commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as recounted in the Quran.
Muslims with financial means celebrate this test of faith by slaughtering livestock and animals and distributing the meat to the poor as part of a joyous celebration that coincides with the Hajj pilgrimage.
Much of Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Bangladesh, will observe Eid al-Adha on Monday, while Muslims in other parts of the globe, including in countries like Saudi Arabia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen celebrated the holiday Sunday.
