More than 70 million Americans – about one in five of the population – are living under heat alerts as temperatures soar.
Authorities are concerned for vulnerable people in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, as the states are not accustomed to this level of heat.
Cooling centers have opened up in cities across the north-east part of America, with officials saying temperatures could top 100F (38C).
Scientists say extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of climate change.
