STORYLINE:
Election campaigns are gaining momentum in Iran as the 28 June presidential vote draws near.

5 hardliners and 1 reformist candidate are competing to become president after former president Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash last month.

The vote comes after recent elections saw record-low turnouts, and as tensions remain high over the country’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, as well as the Israel-Hamas war.

Among the competitors is Saeed Jalili, a prominent hardliner and a former nuclear negotiator.

"Certainly the candidate who is most similar to the martyr Mr. (Ebrahim) Raisi, the servant of the people, will be elected. He will complete Raisi’s plans and will even be better than him," said Mohammad Reza Mirzaee, a Jalili supporter.

Other candidates include Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Alireza Zakani, Mostafa Pourmohammadi and Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh Hashemi.
