STORYLINE:
A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin urged on Friday for "restraint by all sides" after Iran fired air defenses at a major air base and a nuclear site near the central city of Isfahan after spotting drones earlier in the day.
The drones were suspected to be part of an Israeli attack in retaliation for Tehran’s unprecedented drone-and-missile assault on the country.
The Russian spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said that his country stands "for refraining from actions that could provoke the further escalation of tensions."
U.S. news outlets, citing anonymous U.S. and Israeli officials, said Israel carried out the attack.
But the Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment, and no Iranian official directly acknowledged the possibility Israel had attacked.
Tensions have been high since Israel began its war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip and its own strikes targeting Iran in Syria.
