STORYLINE:
Over 200 people registered to donate blood in Kyiv city centre on Tuesday, as intense fighting against Russian troops continues in eastern Ukraine.
The event, organized by the charity fund Soloma Cats, was held on the second floor of one of the city’s most famous bookstores, “Sense.”
Organisers said they chose the location to attract as many people as possible and spread word of the importance of blood donation for a country at war.
Over the past year, Soloma Cats has organized several mass blood donation events, with 63% of around 400 attendees being first-time donors.
Even those who had donated previously, said they were motivated by the urgent need for blood on the frontlines.
“If you’re a healthy person, you can donate to the army in this way,” said Anastasiia Shuiska, 21, from Kyiv.
Organisers said they expected to collect some 90 litres (almost 24 US gallons) of blood at the event, to be sent to the Kyiv Regional Blood Center and the Kyiv Military Hospital.
It will be used for both civilian and military personnel in need.
Soloma Cats’ executive director, Andrii Yerofieiev, said blood banks were shrinking across the country.
“Many people have left the country, including many donors," he said.
The charity fund Soloma Cats was established after the Russian invasion and chose to focus on tactical medicine and blood donation.
The organization also provides military setups for blood transfusions on the frontlines.
After the donation drive, which lasted several hours, the event continued with educational lectures on blood donation, popularizing it as a routine practice to save lives.
