“It’s been very strange. I’m the subject of this movie. This is a great director. I trust it, it’s a group of women, director, producer. It feels a little on. I only saw it once a month ago, and I’ve been freaking out for a month. And tonight I’m just accepting it and going in. And more important, I hope it’s inspiring to a lot of girls and women to know that they can be the women they want to be.”

“I lived a long full life. I was born after the war. I lived the ’70s and it was really good to be young in the ’70s.”

“It’s how she looked at motherhood, the ups and downs of motherhood, and it’s how she looked at both her successes and her failures. And, she’s a real touchstone for women globally.”

“We really wanted to tell an honest story about a woman who started a business at a time when women needed men to cosign for something as small as a credit card, and we wanted to peel the onion and get to the core. Who is Diane? Show her falling down and picking herself up again. There are valuable lessons to learn for all of us, because sometimes when we look at people as celebrities, we only see the glitz and glamor. It’s important to realize the struggles they’ve gone through.”

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Sean Stuart, producer:
“With all of these movies we, our subjects want to be supportive of the idea of telling their story, warts and all. But the minute you pull down those walls, obviously every human being starts to become a bit self-reflexive. She was open. She was ready. You need a willing participant, and DVF is at a point in her life where she was ready to do this. So for us, we got lucky. If you don’t have a willing participant, these movies are incredibly hard to really bring to life. And, luckily, DVF was there.”

STORYLINE:
The 2024 Tribeca Festival fashionably kicked off Wednesday with the premiere of “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge.”
The ground-breaking fashion designer walked the red carpet for the behind-the-scenes documentary.
Directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton, the doc covers von Furstenberg’s life from the young woman that changed the fashion world to the successful businesswoman we know today. But it’s much of the stuff that happens in between those moments that show the struggle in her life.
On the red carpet, von Furstenberg admitted that it’s tough to watch some of the turmoil unfold on screen.
The designer addressed making it through the struggle and the wild days at Studio 54.
“I’m used to it after 50 years,” she said.
