1. SOUNDBITE (English) Lisa Hernandez, chair of the Democratic Party of Illinois:
(Re: migrants) "Leading into the DNC, we’ll continue to work and manage the situation and continue to press, yes, at the federal level and the Biden administration is doing all that they can to work with us."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Minyon Moore, chair of the Democratic National Convention Committee:
"We can’t just look at these as migrants. These are human beings. These are people that are being bused to places that some don’t even know where they’re going. And we have to show the compassion and the concern. As a Democratic party and. Democratic family, I know that I show tremendous concern. And we’re hoping that with the city’s help, with the state’s help, that we will have a plan in place so that it doesn’t feel like it’s just – okay, we gotta a bunch of buses coming in, everybody should run. That’s not the way that we’re approaching this. We’re looking at a very holistic plan right now to make sure that they’re safe if they come, if they’re just dropped off here like they’ve been. They’re being used by the Republican party, and we don’t want to see that happen. So we are going to treat them with dignity and fairness and we hope that the convention will go on, and the city and the state will have a plan in place to address it if we do get big busloads."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Minyon Moore, chair of the Democratic National Convention Committee:
(Re: possible Palestinian protests) "We are very sensitive to the environment that we’re walking in here in Chicago. And we have read the stories and seen the stories and we have heard the stories. And we know that protesters are coming. Protesters come every four years. But what we also know is families come and they bring their children. Many of these people use this time as vacation time. So we have worked very closely with the US Secret Service, very closely with the mayor’s office and the Chicago police. We’re trying to create an environment where everyone is welcome. We do protect First Amendment rights. But we also want to assure you that the people are excited about this convention coming."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Minyon Moore, chair of the Democratic National Convention Committee:
"They’re doing all the right things to protect the citizens of Chicago, but we’re also doing – we hope to do the right things to protect the protesters. But we also believe in peaceful protests, too, and we are trying to
telegraph that as well."

STORYLINE:
Democratic leaders spoke with media Wednesday about security and other plans for the Democratic National Convention that will be held in Chicago August 19 – 22.

Addressing a reporter’s question about migrants, Minyon Moore, chair of the Democratic National Convention Committee, said "We can’t just look at these as migrants. These are human beings. These are people that are being bused to places that some don’t even know where they’re going. And we have to show the compassion and the concern. "

Democrats from across the country are in Chicago this week to receive convention planning briefings and tours of key sites.

Democrats chose Chicago’s United Center, home of the Chicago Bulls and Chicago Blackhawks, as the site of the 2024 national convention in Chicago, choosing the biggest liberal city in the Midwest in an effort to keep the momentum going after a strong midterm election performance in the key battleground region.
