Mexico has elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
She is the latest in a long line of women to break male dominance of the highest political posts of their nations.
STORYLINE:
Claudia Sheinbaum celebrates on stage in Mexico City.
She is the first woman to be elected president in her country.
With about 78% of votes counted, Sheinbaum had some 59% of votes, about twice as many as her nearest competitor Xóchitl Gálvez, who got around 28%.
She may be the first female president in Mexico, but other women have broken new political ground in countries around the world.
The first female president in the world was Isabel Peron of Argentina.
She succeeded her husband, Juan Peron, after his death in 1974 and held the post until 1976.
The UK doesn’t have a president, but its highest political position was first won by a woman in 1979.
Margaret Thatcher was elected in 1979 and led the country for 11 years – longer than anyone else in the 20th century.
The daughter of a shopkeeper, she was dubbed the "Iron Lady" by the British press for her stern determination.
The first elected female president in the world was Iceland’s Vigdis Finnbogadottir.
She was elected in 1980 and held the post until 1996.
Corazon Aquino was the first female president in Asia, holding the position in the Philippines.
She ran against the formidable dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who ruled her country for 20 years.
Bhutto was assassinated in 2007.
She was president until 2018.
