2. Various of tractors queued on French side of the border
3. Farmers spraying on and handling giant banner on toll
STORYLINE:
French and Spanish farmers blocked a highway on the French-Spanish border on Monday, a day before a large farmers’ protest against the European Union’s agricultural policies in Brussels.
Dozens of farmers set up camp on the French side in Biriatou, near the toll between the two countries, unfurling giant banners and vowing to spend the night there.
A week ahead of European elections, farmers want to recall their protests from January and February, when they protested against EU agricultural policies, demanding more government support and simpler regulations.
Farmers complain that the 27-nation bloc’s environmental policies, such as the Green Deal, which calls for limits on the use of chemicals and on greenhouse gas emissions, limit their business and make their products more expensive than non-EU imports.
