An Israeli airstrike on an UNRWA school in central Gaza killed at least 35 people, including women and children, according to the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees. Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the Israeli army had conducted a “precise strike” based on what the military claims was evidence that 30 Hamas militants were residing in three rooms of the school. He added that the military had only struck those exact rooms. UNRWA’s Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini wrote on X that the organization was not able to confirm the presence of Hamas fighters in the school, but that 6,000 people were sheltering at the school when it was struck without warning. The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has called for an urgent independent investigation into the deadly strike.
