"What we found is really the entire system of detention is rife with violations and abuses that range from inhumane conditions of detention, including overcrowding, lack of access to adequate food, water and medical care as well as torture and other forms of ill treatment. So our team visited both al-Roj and al-Hol camps. The majority of individuals in those camps are women and children. Most of them have not been charged with any crime. But the conditions in those camps are absolutely abhorrent."

"Out of those 56,000 people, there are 30,000 kids who are being detained in the system. This is the largest number of children deprived of their liberty anywhere in the world. The detainees also include 14,500 women as well as 11,500 men. The majority of these individuals have been held for about five years, with no prospect for their release anytime soon and no option for them to appeal the decision to detain them."

"One of the key findings of the report is that the United States government is very active in establishing and perpetuating the system of detention. So the U.S. is obviously the most prominent member of the U.S.-led coalition that was formed in order to defeat ISIS (referring to the Islamic State militant group). And the U.S. is largely responsible for a lot of the planning and the financial resources and the strategy of the coalition, which is why we focused, particularly on the U.S. role."

"The U.S. needs to ensure and it has an obligation to ensure that the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces ) – which it is funding – stops, committing the abuses and violations that we documented in the report, and initiates investigations to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Second, all the different stakeholders need to work together to establish a screening process for all of the individuals detained, and to ensure that those who should be released, who are not suspected of recognizable crimes under international law or who themselves are victims of IS, are released."

STORYLINE:
Amnesty International said it has documented widespread abuses, including torture and deprivation of medical care, in detention facilities holding thousands of suspected Islamic State members and their relatives in northeast Syria.
The centers and camps hold about 56,000 people — the majority of them children and teens — and are run by local authorities affiliated with the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
