“There is a great Arab appreciation for the Chinese policies towards the Palestinian case and Beijing’s continuous support for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the legitimate right for Palestinians to establish their independent state. I call upon all actors from the international community to take their moral and legal responsibilities to stop the brutal Israeli war and I call upon the international community to work without any delay for immediate and sustainable access to humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip to put an end to the Israeli siege and to stand against all attempts of forced displacement for Palestinians from their lands.”

4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel-Fattah El-Sissi, Egypt’s President:
“Allow me here to point out again the importance of the Arab water security issue on top of the priorities in the future cooperation under the framework of the Arab Chinese forum due to the danger this issue poses that reaches the level of an existential threat and I want to point out that we have called upon the Ethiopian government for over 10 years to engage in goodwill with Egypt and Sudan to reach a legally binding agreement that secures the rights of current and future generations for the three countries in life and development taking into consideration that we will not allow anyone to jeopardise the safety and stability of our counties and people.”

STORYLINE:
Some Arab leaders gathered in Beijing Thursday in a forum during an escalation in the Hamas-Israel war in Gaza.

Beijing and the Arab states back the Palestinians in the conflict, where Israel is facing growing international condemnation after its strike in the southern Gaza city of Rafah in which at least 45 people were killed over the weekend. The overall Palestinian death toll in the war exceeds 36,000, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi lauded the Egyptian-Chinese relations in an opening speech at the China-Arab Cooperation Forum.

El-Sissi highlighted China’s key role in fostering stability in the Middle East and bolstering bilateral relations that align with Egypt’s Vision 2023 Comprehensive Development.

He also lauded Beijing for being a staunch supporter for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for establishing an independent Palestinian state.

He added that large-scale Chinese cooperation with Arab states would help achieve multiple objectives related to technical collaboration and international order that are needed to face the global economic governance challenges as well as challenges related to water security.
