STORYLINE:
Chan Po-ying goes to prison to see her husband almost every day in Hong Kong.
She is still free, but her husband – veteran activist and former lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung – has been in prison for more than three years.
It’s not difficult for Chan to take the bus from her home in Kowloon to the prison where her husband is held.
The journey takes around thirty minutes but she can only talk to him for fifteen minutes.
68-year-old Leung, also known as “Long Hair”, is one of 47 activists who were prosecuted in Hong Kong’s largest national security law case.
He was first arrested in January 2021.
He was denied bail since March 2021 after days of bail hearings at a Hong Kong court and was in prison since then.
Chan, who is also an activist, has shared a relationship with Leung for decades.
For years, they are both accustomed to freely expressing their views and protesting in the streets.
Leung was charged with conspiracy to commit subversion in connection with an informal primary election in 2020 to pick candidates who could win control of the city’s Legislative Council.
He was accused of attempting to paralyze Hong Kong’s government and topple the city’s leader by securing the legislative majority necessary to veto budgets.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Chan remains Leung’s closest friend and will continue to give him her full support.
