STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s parliament resumed sessions on Tuesday to discuss and vote on a set of controversial bills that aims to expand legislative powers.
Lawmakers were seen chanting slogans and waving banners early Tuesday morning, amid arguments over the procedural justice of passing the bills.
The two opposition parties, the Nationalist Party (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), currently hold majority in parliament.
The KMT has proposed granting the legislature "investigative rights" beyond its current right to access official documents, including convening investigation committees and hearings that can summon government officials and military personnel of various levels, as well as civilian people to testify and provide information.
Last week, thousands of protesters gathered outside the parliament in protest against attempts by the opposition KMT and TPP to pass the controversial bills days earlier.
