"It’s doing something new with something old. Symbolically, for me, it means that nothing is ever really lost. It’s even the sign of the cathedral. If we’d thought on the day of the fire that everything was lost we wouldn’t have done anything. But thanks to the convictions of some, of many, and of the work of enormous amount of people, that this cathedral can reopen in matter of months."

STORYLINE:
A 12 meter-tall (39.3 feet) chevet cross was installed atop Notre Dame cathedral in Paris on Friday.
A crane lifted the cross onto the wooden frame of the choir portion of the cathedral, a structure that is itself still under scaffolding.
The event marked another significant milestone ahead of the cathedral’s expected reopening to the public in December.
The cross survived the devastating fire that five years ago destroyed the cathedral’s roof and caused its spire to collapse.
The cross was designed by architect Eugene Viollet-Le-Duc in the 19th century.
