STORYLINE:
The U.N.’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel on Friday to immediately halt its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a decision that was welcomed by Palestinian assistant Minister of Multilateral Affairs, Ammar Hijazi.

"We express our appreciation for South Africa, for taking the lead in these efforts and for assisting the Palestinian people at these dark hours. We believe it’s a significant day for justice, for ending the atrocities and for upholding international norms. And we look forward to work with all states to end this criminality and hope that all states will abide by their responsibilities in this regard", Hijazi said.

The ICJ’s sharply focused decision sent a clear, three-pronged message to Israel, ordering a halt to the Rafah offensive, access to Gaza for war crimes investigators, and a big and immediate increase of humanitarian aid to the region, parts of which are enduring famine. But the court stopped short of ordering a full ceasefire.

Although the ICJ ruling is a blow to Israel’s international standing, the court doesn’t have a police force to enforce its orders. In another case on its docket, Russia has ignored the court’s 2022 order to halt its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
