STORYLINE:
Pakistani authorities have shut down the office of former prime minister Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf party on Friday due to charges of encroachment upon government land in a residential area in capital Islamabad.

The office of the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ) was partially demolished during the overnight raid on Thursday into Friday.

Rauf Hassan, the information secretary and spokesperson for the party, denounced the action by the authorities.

“This was a blatantly illegal, unconstitutional act," Hassan said. "We intend to take every possible step that we are permitted under the constitution and rule of law in this country”.

Authorities say Khan’s party had violated rules by expanding structure.

A former cricket star turned Islamist politician, Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote by Parliament in 2022 and is serving multiple prison terms after being convicted in various cases

In October, the elections commission disqualified Khan from holding public office for five years after finding he had unlawfully sold state gifts and concealed assets as premier.

Khan denies the charge and has filed a motion with a court to challenge the commission.
