STORYLINE:
Motorcycle drivers in Peru protested Thursday a new policy aimed at reducing criminality.
The government’s measure, imposed on April 14, impedes motorcycle drivers from transporting passengers.
The government argues that two people riding on a motorcycle is the preferred method for armed robbery in the heavy traffic of Lima.
Enrique Perez, one of the protesters, said motorcycles are safer for him and his partner than using a bus.
Motorcyclists are not allowed to wear additional accessories on their helmets that impede face visibility, in addition to requiring them to wear vests with the vehicle’s license plate number.
Police, army, municipality workers and firefighters are exempt from these restrictions.
A first set of restrictions was originally imposed in March when the government declared a state of emergency, after two people were shot dead in a bus.
