STORYLINE:
Toyota and BMW launched their new cars at the Shanghai auto show Wednesday, featuring products tailored to the China market and integrated with AI.
At the Toyota event, several cars were unveiled on stage with Toyota China general manager Li Hui introducing the new vehicles.
"Toyota China has further implemented the business philosophy of inheriting and evolving products and regions," Li said.
Speaking at the BMW launch event, CEO Oliver Zipse said that BMW will "continue to advocate for free trade and open markets because economic growth thrive through opening, not closing."
"We believe that global challenges require more cooperation and not less," he continued.
Some industry experts view this year’s show in the sprawling industrial outskirts of Shanghai as a tipping point.
Three decades after Beijing set out to build a world-class auto industry, local manufacturers account for about two-thirds of sales inside China, and a growing share of global exports.
Zipse also announced that BMW would partner with China AI firm DeepSeek in order to "enhance" their existing Intelligent Personal Assistant.
"Intelligence means combining different AI models and capability in a smart way. And this is how we operate in China."
