“Of that journey, what remains first of all is that walk along the Molo Favaloro, which can be defined famous or infamous depending on the point of view. Certainly a place of tragedies but also of hope. Many people have passed through there, hundreds, thousands of people.”

“Lampedusa has been managing the reception of migrants for almost thirty years. We have seen so many tragedies, so the burden was so heavy. We needed someone to share all this with us, to shout from Lampedusa. We shouted, but they never listened to us, so the arrival of Pope Francis was like a father who caresses everyone. He thanked us for everything Lampedusa has always done in welcoming, but above all he was very touched that day.”

STORYLINE:
For those living on the island of Lampedusa, the death of Pope Francis has a very special meaning.
For there was a very special bond between Pope Francis and this most southern part of Italy and which is considered the gateway to Europe for migrants crossing the Mediterranean.
The Holy Father chose to visit the island in July 2013, as his first papal trip.
Never before had a pope visited this strip of land.
Lampedusa, a treeless, strip of an island nine kilometres (four miles) long, is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland and is the main port of entry into Europe for African migrants smuggled by boat from Libya or Tunisia.
Francis, whose ancestors immigrated to Argentina from Italy, has a special place in his heart for refugees: As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he denounced the exploitation of migrants as "slavery" and said those who did nothing to help them were complicit by their silence.
