“We extend our condolences to the Church and express our sympathy to the Catholic Church and all churches. We also mourn the passing of a very great and luminary figure who had a significant impact on the church, someone who reconciled people and offered extraordinary love.“

5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Anba Basilius, Metropolitan of Minya:
“Perhaps everyone knows about the wars happening around us now. The Pope said, ‘I pray and hope that nations will begin to stop wars and extend their hands toward peace, especially since there are some countries suffering from wars that have caused widespread displacement, famine, and difficult medical conditions.’ The Pope said ‘I call on the world to feel this and to reach out for peace.’ Certainly, we believe that the Pope’s departure may be in body, but on the other hand, we believe that those who carry ideas, and that ideas never die.“

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Adel Fouad, from the clergy of the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary in Nasr City:
“The truth is that Pope Francis was a globally and spiritually influential figure. Throughout his time on the Chair of Peter, he continuously called for peace. In fact, he succeeded in conveying this message of tolerance as one of the highest meanings of peace and advocacy for the homeless to the extent that he opened the doors of the Vatican, its halls, to shelter the homeless. May God have mercy on his soul, and may his prayers be with us. Amen.“

STORYLINE:
Egyptian Coptic Catholics attended a prayer service for the late Pope Francis at the Holy Virgin Mary Coptic Catholic Cathedral on Tuesday in Cairo.

Worshippers at the cathedral remembered Pope Francis’ values and his efforts to bring peace to the world.

"Certainly, we believe that the Pope’s departure may be in body, but on the other hand, we believe that those who carry ideas, and that ideas never die," said Anba Basilius, Metropolitan of Minya.

Pope Francis was history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change.

He died on Monday aged 88.

He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday – a day before his death – to bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, drawing wild cheers and applause.
