++BEGINS ON PREVIOUS SHOT++

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Alan Jackson, defense attorney:
“This case carries a malignancy. A cancer that cannot be cut out, a cancer that cannot be cured, and that cancer has a name. His name is Michael Proctor. There’s not a single part of this case, folks, that he didn’t touch, that he didn’t direct. You’ll learn that Michael Proctor was a longtime family friend of the Alberts. And he’s been disgraced by his own agency, not by us, by the Massachusetts state police.”

18. SOUNDBITE (English) Alan Jackson, defense attorney: “Karen Read is not guilty of hitting John O’Keefe with her SUV. She’s the victim of a botched and biased and corrupted investigation that was never about the truth, folks. It was about preserving loyalty. This case is the very definition of reasonable doubt.”

STORYLINE:
Opening statements begin in the retrial of Karen Read, less than a year after a judge declared a mistrial on charges that she was responsible for the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend. Read is accused of striking her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die in a snowstorm outside of a house party. Her attorneys suggested O’Keefe was actually killed by someone else, possibly another law enforcement agent who was at a house party where his body was found.
After the trial, several jurors came forward to say the group was unanimous in finding Read not guilty of the most serious charge, second-degree murder, and a lesser charge. Despite attempts by Read’s lawyers to get those charges dismissed, she will face the same counts as she did at her first trial. They also failed to have the entire case tossed, arguing governmental misconduct.
