STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday confirmed the reported withdrawal of a Myanmar ethnic armed group from a northern city near the Chinese border after months of occupation.
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), one of the most powerful ethnic groups fighting the junta that seized power from Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in 2021, has pulled out of the town of Lashio, Shan State, according to media reports.
China has sent a group to witness the ceasefire and handover of the town upon invitation, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters at a daily news briefing.
Guo said the latest development was part of the implementation of China-brokered ceasefire negotiations between the insurgents and junta government in the southern Chinese city of Kunming this January.
“China will continue to advance the Kunming peace talks process, work on promoting ceasefire and peace in northern Myanmar, and jointly maintain peace and stability along the China-Myanmar border with all parties in Myanmar,” Guo said.
At the briefing, Guo also confirmed Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi’s visit on Wednesday at China’s invitation.
Separately, Guo justified China’s sanctions on United States officials, lawmakers and leaders of non-governmental organizations, who it says have “performed poorly” on Hong Kong issues.
